The Rhode Island Division of Commercial Licensing and Regulation is the responsible party for all state licensing as well as the regulation of real estate agents, brokers and appraisers. The real estate division also schedules and administers the appropriate real estate exam for each individual party.
In an effort to obtain your real estate license in Rhode Island the Division of Commercial Licensing and Regulation must find that you are in compliance with all of their regulations and guidelines. This page has been designed as a guide to aid you in the licensing process and insure that you receive the appropriate real estate training and tools to continue moving forward with your new real estate career.
Rhode Island Real Estate Pre-License Requirments

The following information is a complete list of all the current real estate license requirements for a real estate salesperson in Rhode Island. Please read through this list carefully and make sure that you have met and/or acquired everything needed to prevent any delay in licensing.
To be eligible for a Rhode Island real estate license, all applicants must meet and/or complete the following:
- You must be eighteen years of age or older at the time of application.
- You must complete and send in a Rhode Island real estate application form which can be found here.
- You are required to complete and show proof of completing a minimum of forty-five clock hours in pre-licensing education through a state approved real estate school.
- You must show that you have successfully completed a three hour course in Lead Poisoning/Lead Hazard Mitigation.
- You must show a Certificate of Errors and Omissions insurance.
- You must show evidence of successful completion of three clock hours in New Agency Law. That is unless this was included within your curriculum of forty-five hours of pre-licensing education.
- You must show a certificate of successful completion of the state issued real estate license exam. You can find out more about the exam in the section below.
Rhode Island Real Estate Exam Information
Before you will become eligible for a Rhode Island real estate license, you must successfully complete the salesperson real estate exam. Your exam must be taken before submitting your license application to the Division of Commercial Licensing and Regulation.

Rhode Island Real Estate Post License Requirements
Currently, Rhode Island real estate licenses are set to expire on April 30th of even numbered years. To renew your license you will be required to successfully complete eighteen clock hours of course specific, state approved real estate continuing education courses.
The renewal fee for a real estate salesperson license at the time of writing is $130.00 for two years. Your renewal fee should be paid on or before the April, 30th of even numbered years, which is the expiration date. As of July 30, 2004, Rhode Island has implemented a fee for late renewal of either a salesperson or broker license. This fee is set at $100.00 which is in addition to the license fee you are already paying.
Rhode Island Real Estate License Reciprocity Agreements
The State of Rhode Island currently has reciprocal license agreements with the following states:
To qualify for a license by reciprocity, you must be a licensed agents in one of the above states and have an active real estate license in good standing with the issuing state. All non-resident licensees are required to carry and maintain errors and omissions insurance.
All non-resident licensees will also be required to meet the continuing education requirements within the issuing state, not Rhode Island.
