The State of Maine is made up of twenty-two cities, sixteen counties and over four hundred unorganized townships, which leaves a fair amount of properties being sold by real estate agents on a regular basis. The state is also considered to be one of the nations healthiest states, thanks in part to the moderate weather, which has many homeowners packing up and moving to the pine tree state.
Getting a real estate agent license in Maine is a pretty straight forward process and the licensing requirements are minimal when placed in comparison to some of the other states. You should know that Maine issues what is called a “biennial real estate license” which means that your salesperson license will remain valid for two years after the date it is issued. After that active period you will need to renew the license with the state. Both new licenses and renewals are subject to an eighty dollar application and license fee, though if you do not renew within ninety days of expiration there will be an additional fifty dollar late fee imposed, so get those renewals done on time.
What is required to get your real estate salesperson license in Maine?
As we briefly mentioned above, Maine’s licensing requirements are pretty minimal and include:
- All applicants must complete a real estate license application.
- Applicants must have graduated high school or received an equivalent (GED).
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
- Applicants must successfully complete the Real Estate Sales Agent course with of 75% or better.
- This one should go without saying, but all applicants must pass the Maine real estate sales agent licensing examination with a final grade of 75% or better within one year of passing the Sales Agent course.
All of these requirements can be met in a moderately short period of time, considering you follow them in order and are sure to be thorough and follow-up on all of your paperwork. You can visit the Office of Licensing and Registration to find out how to apply and download a real estate sales agent licensing application to get started. You have one year after completing the license examination to apply for your license, otherwise the exam will have to be repeated.
Maine also allows reciprocal licensing agreements:
Those of you that do have a real estate license in another state may qualify for a reciprocal real estate license in the state of Maine. Their reciprocal policies are good for the majority of states within the continental U.S., but there are a few requirements that you will need to meet (you can view a list of other state requirements here, or have a look at Maine’s Reciprocal Licensing Page).
The basic requirements are that you show proof of being a licensed real estate agent in another state and pass the Maine Law examination as issued by the state. You can find out more about getting a real estate license in Maine or their reciprocal license agreements on the Office of Licensing and Registration website.
