I got my real estate license by going to school online at Real Estate Express http://www.realestateexpress.com/
You have to find a proctor for your final exam (did mine at our local community college.) The course cost $300, the proctor $50, the state exam $140. I also bought a test helper book at Barnes and Noble for $25.
You then have to take your licensing exam with the state. In VA, you will also have to find a Broker to hold your license.
Go for it!

Most localities offer short-term real estate courses, that take several weeks and cost around $800. Once you complete and pass the course, you must take the state exam - usually around $100. If you pass that, you are issued a license.
Look in your phone book for 'real estate classes'. If you live in a very small community, you may have to drive a bit for the closest. You must also pass a background check to get a license.

There are schools available, and you have to pass the state exam. Ask a realtor to recommend a school.

First go to this link http://www.dre.ca.gov/exm_sales.html
Once you have read that page scroll down to Search for approved statutory / prelicense real estate course.
I took the on line course at Allied based out of Laguna it was not too expensive and pretty easy.
