Free Advertising – Get Your Name Out There

Unless you are the only real estate agent in town, you are going to want people to know your name, and how to contact you to handle their real estate needs.  Having a few yard signs up is good, placing ads in your local newspaper and real estate for sale magazines is also good, but can be a bit pricey.  Radio and television ads can be an excellent source of new clients, but again it takes a chunk of your hard earned money.  Even mail campaigns cost for printing, postage and giveaways.  So how can you get your name out there for free?

Tip 1: Blog, blog and more blog.  If you don’t already have a website with a blog on it, start a free blog on sites such as Blogger or WordPress.  Set up a site and BLOG DAILY!  I know it’s work, but it is free advertising, you are putting your name, contact information, expertise etc. out there for the world to see.  Blog about up coming events in your neighborhood, prepping your home for sale, the benefits of curb appeal, how to clean your gutters to prevent damage to your roof—you get the idea, blog about things that are important to people who are new to the area, who are thinking about selling or buying a how, or homeowners tips (if they are looking to your blog for tips and tricks they will come back to you when it’s time to sell.)  The don’t have to be long, 300 words to 500 words (if you go for the real estate version of War and Peace people will get bored and move on.)  But here are some tips to remember:

Spelling counts – ifn yur speling looks lik these yur blog is gonna fale.
It’s a blog not a text message – don’t cut out vowels and stay away from acronyms, because not everyone understands l8r, BFF, TTFN or even MLS and NAR.  Stick with spelling things out in full (if you are writing about the National Association of Realtors (NAR) use this format the first time then you can make other references using only the NAR acronym.

If you are more comfortable writing in a language other than English – do so.  You have a marketable useful gift, use it.  There are people out there who speak French, Spanish, Russian, etc. and who are most comfortable conversing in their native language.

Don’t loose your focus – In short blogs this shouldn’t be a huge problem, staying on track is fairly easy in 300 words.  But if you get wordy and start rambling off on a tangent or get sidetracked and forget what your original subject matter is, it can be very off putting.  If you’re talking about fall clean up around the house, and end up describing the local football team – it’s a little hard for people to take you seriously

Save your bashing and trashing for something that doesn’t involve your business – We all have something that just pushes the wrong button and irritates the living daylights out of us, and any other normal red blooded human, we want to gripe about it.  Not a good idea to use your business blog or website for this kind of venting.  Sometimes holding back is a good thing!

Tip 2: As you begin blogging, start thinking about writing articles for article submission sites like http://www.ezinearticles.com  or http://www.articledashboard.com, you can even write for us.  As in writing your blog, you will be writing 300 to 500 word article and submitting them to an article directory each article will link back to your website.  The articles can then be used by other websites, and your name and website have now linked to other sites on the web.  The same rules apply to these shared articles as to your blog.  So get out there and advertise, remember also to include you website address and blog address on all your correspondence and business cards!  See free advertising… It’s a beautiful thing.
