Car Safety Tips for Real Estate Agents
Often it seems that as a Real Estate Agent you spend half your life in your car. Mile after mile of home tours, commute time, client appointments, and more often than not a quick run through the drive-thru and lunch in the car. As much time as you spend in your mobile office, being safe and secure in it is a high priority. Here are a few tips to keep you, your clients and other motorists safe, while you conduct business on the open road.
- Cell phone usage - invest in a quality hands free headset for your phone, so that you hands can remain on the wheel where they belong. Many states have already enacted cell phone laws for just this reason. Know your limitations. If you can’t speak on the phone and concentrate on driving - Do Not Answer Your Phone - it’s only common sense.
- Cell phone charger - keep one handy in the car, if you get lost, stuck, stranded and you phone is dead, it is a little hard to get help if you can’t ask for it.
- Keep your gas tank filled
- Check your tires, fluids, brakes, battery/battery cables often. The few minutes it takes to preform this check could save your hour of time, if not serious injury if a tire blows or your breaks fail.
- Keep your windows and mirrors clean, and clear of anything that might interrupt your view.
- When transporting clients, make sure that everyone is buckled up, and if there are young children be sure they are in a properly secured car seat.
- Keep your mind on the road, whether it is focusing on your lunch, replaying an argument you had with family, or discussing the merits of the last house you showed you client, your main focus should be on your driving. If you do have a hard time concentrating on conversation while driving, take a few minutes while you’re still stopped and the latest house to ask questions or get feedback.
- In every city around the country, there are areas that it just isn’t safe. Let someone know where you are, and when you are expected to return, or take another agent with you for your appointment. There are strength in numbers.
- Know your surroundings, be aware of what is going on around you, have more than one exit planned. This is always important and could potentially save your life.
